You could have a lean idle circuit. This could be an adjustment/calibration problem or a dirty carb. When you open the throttle you bypass the idle circuit and the accelerator pump richens the mixture to keep the motor running. If you haven't done any performance mods I would try some carb cleaner.

Is it OK to ride motorcycle with choke on?

Running rich (choke on) is not a big problem causer - certainly not as bad as running lean; you'll foul your plugs and build up a bit of carbon in the gas path. Beyond that, it's just a nusiance problem.

Why does my motorcycle run better with the choke on?

As far as your bike running better with the Choke ON, that is a clear indication that your engine is being fed a lean mixture. Most carburetors have a choke that operates by either adding more fuel or by restricting incoming air. Both methods produce the same effective enriching of the mixture.

Why does my bike die when I turn the choke off?

It can be caused by an air leak. Air leaks can be caused by cracks in the vacuum lines on some carbs, a crack in the air boot, or simply a loose clamp between the carb and the air boot. Remember, more air in the system means a leaner air/fuel ratio, thus causing an overly lean condition when the choke is turned off.

Is it bad to leave the choke on?

Leaving the choke on for too long will cause unnecessary engine wear and waste fuel. ... The engine needs its fuel to be vaporised in order to burn it. This is done by the carburettor where the fuel is mixed with clean air coming from the air filter, and sent into the pistons to be ignited.

How long should I choke my motorcycle?

The choke usually "chokes" the air supply into the engine so it gets more petrol than usual. Hence it's name. You should start the bike from cold with half or full choke depending on how cold it is. After 30 seconds is usually enough for most bikes.

Why does engine only run with choke on?

When the engine is cold, it needs slightly more fuel in the fuel/air mixture for it to start, which is what the choke does. ... If a motorcycle or ATV only runs with the choke on, it's because the richer “choke on” mixture is actually closer to the engine's normal operating fuel mixture than the leaner “choke off” mixture.

How do you fix a rich running motorcycle?

The 6 main ways to fix a motorcycle running rich are to:

  1. Adjust the air to fuel ratio.
  2. Check if the needle is sticking in the carburetor.
  3. Check for stuck open floats.
  4. Clean your air filter.
  5. Check for stuck open butterfly valves.
  6. Change your O2 sensors if your motorcycle has them.

Should a motorcycle start without choke?

You should only need to choke the motor in colder weather to help add fuel on a cold startup. Fuel will condense on the cold metal parts of the intake track otherwise. Using the choke to raise RPMs to help it idle cold without needing extra fuel will just foul plugs.

Why does my motorcycle die when I give it gas?

Dirty Air Filter. As the air filter cleans the air entering the carburetor, it will eventually become dirty or clogged and may prevent the proper amount of air from mixing with the fuel, causing your engine to stall.

Why does my motorcycle not idle?

A clogged air filter may not allow a sufficient amount of air into the combustion chamber, contributing to a rough idle. Bad fuel will cause your engine to run erratically. Gas can go stale in as few as 30 days, especially fuel mixed with ethanol as it is in many areas.

Is choke up or down?

And unlike in golf, where the terms are used interchangeably and usually mean the same thing, in baseball choke up and choke down have two different meanings. In baseball, "choke up" means sliding one's hands farther away from the grip-end of the bat; "choke down" means moving one's hands closer to the end of the bat.

What is the choke on motorcycle?

A choke valve/cable is designed to restrict the flow of air in the carburettor of an engine. This helps enrich the fuel-air mixture, improving the ability to start an engine in low temperature conditions.
