How do I know if my CDI is working?

First measure the resistance between the primary wire that comes from the CDI box and the ground or ground wire. The resistance should measure around . 5 to 1.5 Ohms. If that checks out, you can then measure the resistance between the secondary wire (plug wire), w hich should measure in the thousands.

Can a bike run without a CDI?

Keeping this in view, can a bike run without a CDI? Yes, you can with a mechanical unit. But customizing one will take lots of time and effort. It might be even more costly to custom build one as the CDI on the market shelf is mass produced one hence efficiently produced.
